Plaza District Association Selects Artist for District’s First Public Art Commission

Oklahoma City, September 29, 2017 – The Plaza District Association is pleased to announce that artist Don Narcomey has been selected to create the District’s first commissioned public art piece. Narcomey’s work draws references from the natural environment and the materials he works with, primarily metal and wood. Narcomey has exhibited his work nationally and has won numerous awards.

“I am honored to be chosen to create the Plaza District’s first public sculpture and am excited to be a part of this project,” said Narcomey “As a lifelong resident of the Oklahoma City Metro Area and a twenty-five-year resident of the Gatewood Urban Conservation District, I have witnessed firsthand the revitalization of the Plaza District and am looking forward to participating in its future growth.”

Narcomey was selected after a lengthy jury process by the Plaza District Association Selection Committee.

"The committee was challenged by several excellent proposals from local artists which proves both the quality of Oklahoma artists and the Plaza District's commitment to local art,” said Stephen Kovash, selection committee member and past board president of the Plaza District Association. “The selection of an artist of Don Narcomy's caliber assures the Association's place as an organic environment that is welcoming and creative. I look forward to the continuing development of the District as a Public Art destination."

Plans for Narcomey’s sculpture will debut in the 2017 Plaza District Festival Art Lounge, this Saturday, September 30 from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The sculpture will take three months to complete, and is funded by the Plaza District Association’s annual Sponsored by YOU campaign. The campaign aims to raise $5,000 through crowdsourcing. To date, the campaign has raised 98% of the goal in just under 30 days. Donations will be accepted online at through September 30.
