Looking back at 2016

Hello dear friends!

What a year it has been! We want to thank you all for continuing to support the Plaza District, our businesses, and all of the fun events we have throughout the year. We've seen an incredible amount of growth and know that 2017 has even more in store. It has been such a wonderful sight to see the district bustling with people every single day and at all times of the day. We love that you all love us so much! We look forward to continue serving the area and continuing our mission to develop the Plaza District as a vibrant commercial district where arts, local business and neighborhood community thrives.

Our 2016 Plaza District Festival was one for the books! We were so excited to be able to offer the new art/wine tent, children's boutique, provide more opportunities for local musicians and artists, and have the first ever Plaza Walls Mural Expo.

Although weather was not always on our side, we celebrated LIVE on the Plaza every Second Friday, rain or shine, with fun themes that included everything from pets to science and partnered with several local nonprofits! This past June, we teamed up with our friends at deadCenter Film Festival to make LIVE on the Plaza the local film festival's first ever satellite location. We also saw so many of our local artist friends featured in galleries and shows all throughout the year. We're excited to for what's to come for LIVE on the Plaza in 2017!

For our 12th annual Urban Pioneer Awards, we honored longtime Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma Executive Director, Paula Stover. Paula and Lyric Theatre have been a driving force behind the renaissance of the district with the re-adaptation of the Plaza Theatre into a premier performance venue that has brought thousands of new faces to the area, employed hundreds of artists and cultivated the next generation and theatre patrons and performer.

This year, the Plaza District Association was also able to sponsor and support events put on by our businesses and business owners. These events included: The Great American Cloth Diaper Exchange, a special Plaza Walls Mural tribute made by Dusty Gilpin,  the Day of the Dead Festival, and the Plaza Walls Mural Expo.

Other exciting events that were new this year that included the Plaza Community Garden, the first everEarth Day FestivalYogaFest, a yoga festival coordinated by YogaLab, Empire Slice House threw a giant anniversary party, and Plaza Beer Walk, a monthly pub crawl coordinated by Plaza restaurants, just to name a few.

We've grown from 45 businesses to 50 businesses just in the past year! New businesses included: The Pritchard, Reference Point, Simpleton Goods, The Broom Closet, Well Beauty, and Goro Ramen and Izakaya. In 2017, we're expecting even more. And we know what you're all thinking, yes, there will be more parking.

This past year has been great, but we know that 2017 will be even better. None of what we have accomplished this year would be possible without the hard work from the Plaza District business owners, the dedication of our many volunteers, and our district sponsors, Fowler Auto and Oklahoma Employees Credit Union. They are the heart and soul behind everything we do!

Thank you all for loving and supporting this little slice of life in the heart of OKC. See you soon!

Sincerely,
Cayla Lewis
Plaza District Association
Executive Director
