Picnic on the Plaza – this Friday, June 14th!
Sponsored by Fowler VW of Norman
The Plaza District welcomes the summer months with a giant picnic!
For June LIVE on the Plaza, we are transforming the a Plaza street corner into a lovely grassy picnic area. We will have fresh produce from Urban Agrarian to snack on while you sit and play for awhile or to take with you on your stroll down 16th. Kick back and relax or bring the kiddos for outdoor games and fun!
The Plaza District is very excited to welcome Backpacks with a Purpose to LIVE. BWAP will be throwing a launch party to kick off their new retail line of backpacks. For every one backpack sold through BWAP, two will be donated to a non-profit in need. During this event, this Oklahoma-based company will also have a photo booth, DJ, and giveaways of t-shirts, gift certificates, and food – all from local businesses.
We have got a lot of great local artist talent in this community! Stop into IVC Galleries for this month’s featured artist Mikul Anderson. Mikul’s work is described as “a wonderful and dream-like interpretation of the beautiful city and landscapes of Oklahoma.” The Salvage Room will be hosting local photographer, Ross Adams and his series of photos, “My Stupid Life.” Be sure to pop into DNA Galleries for featured art from Bombs Away in their “A Little Battered Yet OK” benefit exhibit. They will have several prints available for sell as well, proceeds benefiting tornado relief efforts. Max from Bomb Shelter and Dig It have teamed up this month to bring an extra special window display as well as the release of Bomb Shelter’s new artbook, “Monsters.” The series of images and installations have been on display over the past few months during LIVE. Tree & Leaf will also debut the first of many poster print artists. Each month, T&L will host a new artist and premiere a special screen printed poster of the artists work. For June, the artist will be Alesa Clymer, whose work features whimsical animals painted and illustrated beautifully.
LIVE wouldn’t be LIVE without live music. Catch Porch Mice at Bad Granny’s then swing by next door to The Parish for The Younglings and Matt Jewett & The Rowdy Dows. The Parish will also be featuring works from local artist, Anna Rutherford, as well as providing $1 espresso drinks.

Give them a toast with beer from Mustang Brewery they’ll be providing for this special occasion! Be sure to browse through all the new mod furniture and unique handmade items they’ve saved just for this big event.
We’ve got a little something new for you this month! As always there will be $1 espresso to help you last through this fun, art, and music filled night. Live music, local art, caffeine, and a good cause – what’s not to like about all that?
The Sierra Club will also be gracing us with their presence during LIVE. There will be a booth set up so attendees can write letters and share their climate story, take a photo with a message to President Obama and learn how the Sierra Club is fighting climate change locally by working to transition Oklahoma to clean energy and beyond coal fired electricity. Sean Vali, a local artist, will be live painting a concept related to the climate and energy issues we face.
We’ve got another new friend on the Plaza! We are proud and excited to welcome IVC Galleries, now sharing space with PhotoArt Studios. Be sure to drop in to the new and improved space to check out some more local art. IVC has been on Broadway for some now but is making the move to the Plaza and we are thrilled! There will also be live music by Them Hounds for your listening pleasure.
According to Plaza Association President Kristen Vails, a small surprise will be waiting for those spotted wearing green. “We’re unveiling a colorful new incentive at this LIVE event to encourage people to visit our retail shops in the district,” Vails said. “The green will need to be clearly visible for people to earn the reward. The traditional St. Patty’s day claim that you’re wearing green underwear won’t be investigated. Those not wearing any green may or may not get pinched.”
And of course, all of the Plaza businesses will be open later than usual for all your local shopping needs!

If an artist is selected and provides availability for 4 months, the fee will be an additional $60. Likewise, for 3 months, the fee will be $45. Along with an acceptance email, a schedule will also be sent.
The advance fee is to hold artists accountable for showing up. Previous years, we have done check in the day of; we understand that there will sometimes need to be cancellations (due to weather or other engagements) and artists may not be selected for all of the months they desired, so we will also compile a list of substitutes for each month. If inclement weather occurs, rescheduling will be arranged.
All artists will set up along the 16th Street sidewalk.
Availability: There will only be 20 artists selected. Artists must submit this online application to be considered as one of the 20 artists for the outdoor artist market. Each month, only 10 artists will be selected for that month. Please indicate on the form which month(s) you would prefer and we will do our best to accommodate.

Selection Process: There will be a committee of judges including local artists, district business owners and frequent event visitors to gain a broad perspective when selecting LIVE on the Plaza artists. Because we are trying to keep the Plaza District and LIVE diverse, no preferential treatment will be given to previously selected artists.
Artist notification will be within 2 weeks of the deadline.

LIVE ON THE PLAZA 90s in November
Sponsored by Fowler Volkswagen of Norman
7-11pm, Friday, Nov 9th 1700 block NW 16th Street
Bust out the overalls (with the strap down), frost those tips, dig out your Docs, and break out the flannel because LIVE on the Plaza, presented by Fowler Volkwagen of Norman, goes 90’s for November!
Visitors will be able to relive the dream of the 90’s with the LIVE on the Plaza 90’s Picture Rewind Photobooth! We will provide the radical background, you provide the threads! All 90’s garb encouraged—so dig out those high tops, clip on a pager, and look back on the 90’s in style!
Who better to quiz you on your 90′s knowledge than our own local social blog, The Lost Ogle! These “obscure” fellas want to know if you can still “get jiggy with it”, and who was “the bomb” last decade! We will have some slammin’ prizes thanks to Fowler VW, including your favorite 90′s TV box sets! The trivia contest is free so make sure you come ready to “explain it all” starting at 7:30pm at Paula & Company Realtors. Be there!
Amongst all the 90’s fun, LIVE on the Plaza will still be packed with fresh art shows, live music and local creativity. The Society is pleased to announce an exhibition of work by photographer Ashford Ravencroft Thomson as well as live music by Matt Jewett & the Rowdy Dow and Em and the MotherSuperiors. Ashford Ravenscroft Thomson is an American photographer born in Oklahoma. He uses the camera as a tool to understand and explore his environmental surroundings through fine art and documentary photography. While attending the Savannah College of Art & Design, he began to expand upon this affection for people and cultures which he feels brings him closer to grasping the human experience. View Ashford’s work at The Society from 7-11pm.
At DNA Galleries, local artist Jerrod Smith will be displaying new works. Jerrod is a longtime part of the Plaza District creative community. Although he launched The Society art space in 2011, DNA Galleries is pleased to present his new work in their space as a celebration of the close-knit community of artists that have built up the creative foundation of the district. Jerrod’s work is ever changing and ever developing, so stop by DNA Galleries to support our local artists.
Even more live music will be heard at Bad Granny’s Bazaar. DS Yancey and The Union begin their fabulous folk music at 8pm. So stop in for music, and shop Bad Granny’s full of funky and vintage finds!
LIVE on the Plaza will have plenty of “grind-age” to munch on! Local food trucks will be out cruising the Plaza and the Plaza restaurants will be ready to serve!
