OKLAHOMA CITY — October 9, 2019 — Lyric Theatre is partnering with the Plaza District, Plaza Walls and DigIt! next weekend to present an evening of entertainment both inside and outside of the Plaza Theatre!
In its first-ever presentation of “The Floor Show,” the organizations will showcase live mural painting, and drag performances from top local entertainers and sponsor prize giveaways. Activities in the District will take place both prior to the 8 p.m. performance of Lyric’s The Rocky Horror Show and before the special midnight performance.
The Floor Show & Queer Crawl on the Plaza festivities begin at 5 p.m. on Friday, October 18, in the Plaza Walls, located next to Lyric Theatre, 1725 NW 16 St., with a live mural tribute painting to Rocky. At 6 p.m., The first “Floor Show” hosted by drag entertainer Topatio and friends begins in the Plaza Walls courtyard. Following Lyric’s 8 p.m. performance of Rocky, a second drag performance will begin at 10 p.m. in front of DigIt!, leading up to Lyric’s midnight Rocky presentation.
“This event is about immersing the community in the stories we’re telling year-round in the Plaza District, and this time, the story is The Rocky Horror Show,” said Rachael Leonhart, Group and Community Engagement Coordinator for Lyric Theatre. “A lot of people come because it’s a cult classic and a party, but it’s also a story that, when it first came out, really helped people in the LGBTQIA+ community come out of the closet. It’s a celebration of individuality.”
The stage production of Rocky, later adapted into a movie, is a humorous tribute to the science fiction and horror “B” movies of the 1930s through the early 1960s. The musical tells the story of a newly engaged couple – Brad and Janet – getting caught with a flat tire in a storm and seeking assistance at the eerie mansion of a mad transvestite scientist, Dr. Frank ‘N’ Furter. While at the home, the scientist unveils his newest creation, a Frankenstein-style monster in the form of a physically perfect muscle man named Rocky, complete “with blond hair and a tan.” As their innocence is lost, Brad and Janet are introduced to a houseful of wild characters, including a rocking biker and a creepy butler.
Local entertainer Topatio is most recognized for his following of regular performances at both DigIt! and The Loaded Bowl. During The Floor Show, Topatio will be joined by fellow performers Tape, Jalika, Mulan, Q and Oliver. Throughout the night, trivia contests will be held, with prizes awarded from local businesses.
The Floor Show is free and open to all ages. Tickets to Lyric’s performances of The Rocky Horror Show will be available for purchase at the event.
