In 1986, some five years before Anthony Hopkins made Hannibal Lecter a household name in Silence of the Lambs, there was Michael Mann’s Manhunter. Adapted from Thomas Harris’s Red Dragon, Manhunter is a sleek, highly stylized foray into the psychological world of cops and criminals and it also gave audiences their first glimpse of the characters that, 30 years later, live on in the brilliant NBC drama Hannibal. Given all that’s happened between 1986 and now, it’s a little difficult to see just how groundbreaking Manhunter was at the time. Coolly directed by Michael Mann (Heat, The Last of the Mohicans) and dressed up in high, mid-eighties style with a synth-heavy, moody musical score, Manhunter is both a brilliant thriller and an amazing time capsule that remains criminally underseen.
