Exhibiting: June 10th – July 5th, 2015

As we edge closer to summer June marks the start of the season of light. In celebration of the season Kasum Contemporary Fine Art will be debuting Verre Glomis works by gallery artist Christopher Pendleton and collaborative concepts in illuminated glass by local guest artists Angela Slack and Katherine Reynolds. The exhibit Vitrum Novus, meaning new glass, will offer arts patrons, observers and aficionados modern approaches to an old medium.

Christopher Pendleton is an abstract artist who works inside the technical realm of Verre Glomis; also referred to as reverse glass painting. The artist’s works have no direct reference relative to scale; the compositions appear macroscopic or microscopic as the viewer is likely to recognize a condensed world of amoeba-like forms jockeying for position or, conversely, a meteoric streak across a cosmic void lit by thousands of points of light. Pendleton’s work is intuitive and random at the same time. There are free flowing organic masses juxtaposed with bold, deliberate lines of contrasting color. The forms are abstracted but the mind of the viewer continues to search for something familiar within the shapes and colors. The overall effect is that of an acceptance of chance mingled with the calculated stroke of the artist’s hand. Christopher Pendleton was born in Berrien Springs, Michigan, on May 20th, 1982. In 2010, Pendleton obtained his BFA and graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of New Mexico.

The exhibit will also feature collaborative works in neon and fused glass by guest artists Angela Slack and Katherine Reynolds. A veteran of neon knowledge Reynolds founded Reynolds Neon, now Reynolds and Son Neon, in 1985 and has been exhibiting her works of light since the early 90’s. Collaborator Angela Slack has been developing her knowledge of fused glass for the last eight years. Though independently their works stand miles apart both artists’ works demonstrate an uncanny understanding of design aesthetics. The result of their combined creativity is delivered through their luminous sculptures where finely patterned fused glass fragments walk along organic paths of neon.

Kasum Contemporary Fine Art will host an opening reception at the gallery on the evening of Thursday, June 11th from 5:30-8:30 PM. The exhibit Vitrum Novus, which opens on June 10th, will run through Sunday, July 5th.
