A professor emeritus of Southwestern Oklahoma State University, LeRoy Schultz dedicated more than 35 years of his life to expanding the minds of young artists where he graduated in 1969. Following some 40 years of focus in ceramics Shultz looked for ways to transition to new forms of media which would better suite his retirement; a search that led the artist to a series of self-discoveries and studies in his work with wood and other found materials. Like many artists, Schultz doesn't lean in any one particular direction when it comes to aesthetic influences. He concentrates on developing his own style and technique – not surprising for a self-described "dabbler" whose other interests include metal casting. Schultz's chief considerations for his work are his own enjoyment and that of his audience. "I just enjoy art," he says, "It's been a part of my life since I was a child. I enjoy all kinds of art – to do it and to view it." Over the last several years the artist has developed a highly recognizable series of totems crafted from fine hardwoods, laminates and found objects. Schultz new free standing and wall mounted sculptures will be featured in the solo exhibit Contemporary Totems: New Works by LeRoy Schultz which will be hosted at Kasum Contemporary Fine Art in the Plaza District this spring.
The gallery will host an opening reception for the exhibit, Contemporary Totems: New Works by LeRoy Schultz, the evening of Saturday, April 11th from 6:00-9:00 PM.
