After more than a year on hiatus from the Oklahoma City art scene well-known local expressionist Thomas Batista will make his triumphant return with a feature of new works in the Plaza District at Kasum Contemporary Fine Art this February. Batista’s newest body of work, The Ladies, pays homage to the beauty of femininity. His focus, however, is not on curves, dimples or any other ample aesthetic. His focus is on character; the defining hallmark of a woman. There is an enigmatic quality to the artist’s portraits which exude the identifiably expressive color he is so well known for producing in his landscapes. With mystery surrounding the identity of each muse, her persona takes on the foreground in each composition delivering notes of strength, sensuality, independence and compassion. Batista’s overlapping color fields generate a natural movement that leads the observer’s eye throughout each composition and drives the d esire to linger a little longer. Thomas’s works offer a subtle approach to shape and form with a looseness that feels in-the-moment and a sense of playfulness. Batista’s paintings represent, for the artist, “The disruption of reality”. Everything about his work seems natural and with a lifetime of experience in his portfolio it should.

Batista was born in La Guaria, Venezuela, of Canary Islands (Spain) descent, and holds bachelors and masters degrees in Art from Oklahoma City University. Thomas also made international study of the arts at Atelier Nazaret CHARITAS in La Guaira, Academia de Arte Power and Universidad Simon Bolivar in Caracas, Venezuela. The artist has served as an educator in the fields of Design, Graphic Design, Package Design, Color, and Drawing at higher education institutions including Oklahoma City University, the University of Central Oklahoma and Oklahoma Christian University. Thomas Batista also served as the Creative Director, President and CEO of The Batista Group; an Oklahoma City advertising, design, public relations and corporate communications firm which the artist founded. Batista has been honored with numerous ADDY and Merit Awards by the Oklahoma City Advertising Club. In 1987, he received the Award of Merit from the Houston Illustrators Society and the Award of Excellence f rom the Graphic Communications Society of Oklahoma. He was the 1983 and 1984 recipient of the Fritz Ford Art Award at Oklahoma City University. In 1981, he was awarded a four-year full scholarship in the USA by the Fundacion Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho.

His creative expressions have resulted in evocatively emotive artworks which dot the world map in collections throughout the globe. Batista’s work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Oklahoma, Texas and Venezuela including his one-man show, Pentimentos, at the Kirkpatrick Center Museum Complex in Oklahoma City. Recently the Oklahoma City Museum of Art acquired work by Thomas Batista which now resides in their permanent collection.
