Indiana Wall Featured Artist: Rick Sinnett

Plaza Walls, a curated rotating mural project in the Plaza District, will debut a mural by Oklahoma artist Rick Sinnett at the August LIVE! on the Plaza. Sinnett will be the seventh artist to debut a 756 square foot mural featured on the west side of the 16th Street Plaza Shopping Center in the past seven months.

“The piece that I will be painting for Plaza Walls will be a nod to what has now, almost 30 years later, become my definable style: bold, black lines, symmetry, geometry and contoured lines,” Sinnett said. “In the beginning, all of my art was created using black and white pen and ink. It wasn’t until years later that I started adding color,” he continued.

The execution of Sinnett’s mural will take place between August 8-12, 2016. The mural will be on view from August 12, 2016 through September 4, 2016.

Rick Sinnett is a native Oklahoman who has spent more than 20 years mastering serigraphy. He has created artwork for everything from show posters for bands to credit cards. Sinnett’s work also includes letterpress printmaking, glass etching and sculpting. In recent years, Sinnett’s career has led him to a new frontier – mural painting. Sinnett’s passion for bringing art to the people has driven him to create exciting and colorful, larger-than-life paintings. His series of murals along The Mother Road, America’s famous Route 66, is currently in production. His latest artistic journeys, along with painting more murals, include adult coloring books, tapestries, hammocks and effects pedals for the electric guitar.

Kasum Contemporary: Tiny Works Art Show

  • Kasum Contemporary Fine Art

Kasum Contemporary Fine Art, in the Plaza District of Oklahoma City, is set to shine light on a double feature of small works opening August 3rd and exhibiting through August 14th. The feature pairs the clever animated Art Toys of maker Allin KHG with the street style Tiny Works of artists Chris Harjo and Jeannette L. Herrera a.k.a. BlueFaceKiller. The gallery will host a closing reception for the exhibit during Live on the Plaza on Friday, August 12th from 7:00-10:00 PM. During the closing reception the gallery will also host the final performance from performance artist Valerie Sharp’s four-part series Innocence Lost from 8:00-10:00 PM. The exhibit and associated events are free and open to the public.

When Allin KHG’s father gave him “The First Toy” the artist remembers appreciating the gift but also being disappointed by how ordinary it was. Over the course of the weeks that followed the artist made appealing alterations which would deliver the toy from mundane to one-of-a-kind; and which acted as the geneses for more than 25 years or creativity. His animated creations range from the sexually humorous to the downright dark depths of laughable. The debut of new novelties, from the Oklahoma City based artist, range from $20.00 to $200.00; with a focus on works in the $30.00 – $50.00 range. Gift givers seeking something completely unexpected will find exactly what they are looking for in abundance at Allin’s interactive adult toy table.

L.A. based Street and folk artist Jeannette Herrera, known internationally as Blue Face Killer, is keeping her heritage alive 4,000 miles away from its epicenter. Herrera composes visual narratives, alla prima (Wet on wet), which marry her Peruvian heritage with street culture and personal experience. Capitalizing on the memes, patterns and lore of Peruvian folk crafts the artist’s works focus on themes of death, survival, heroism, defiance, love, sex and religion. Jeannette’s paintings communicate directly and unabashedly; often referencing subject matter which could be considered dark or provocative.

Tulsa based guest artist Chris Harjo is a self-proclaimed paint slinger, pen dipper, and pencil wielder. Harjo has a direct line on surplus panel scraps from a few cabinet shops which keep his prolific flow of street style artworks in constant production. Using drawing media and acrylic on reclaimed panel the artist creates figure works which blur the lines between Kodomomuke and Sticker Art. The duo’s selection of Tiny Works range from as small as one square inch to eight by eight inches; and will be available from $25.00-$195.00 each.

Plaza Living Legends Party

Plaza Living Legends Party

  • NW 16th and Indiana

The beauty of a mural is the impact it can have beyond the wall. The recent Plaza Walls mural has certainly made that impact. Artist Dusty Gilpin’s “Welcome to the Plaza” is a tribute to Plaza District’s very own living legends, Charles “Cuz” Kirby and Domingo Luna. Dusty wrote it best:

“Every town has a sign or a mural or water tower recognizing their hometown heroes or living legends. Well, these are ours. They've had no financial investment in the development of the neighborhood, but they help define what the Plaza is. The Plaza is a community, not a shopping center. The Plaza, like Cuz would have it, is a family. Absolutely, and most importantly, everyone is welcome here,”

To celebrate these legends, the Plaza District is hosting a surprise party in their honor. A chance to treat them like the celebrities they are, to us. Help us honor them by showing up the party! We’d love to see them surrounded by their family, Plaza family and a whole bunch of people they don’t know. Think of it as a flash mob of sorts, a chance to be a part of something special.

The party will take place in front on the Plaza Wall mural on Indiana and NW 16th Street from 8-8:30pm (feel free to stay longer and mingle!). We will have light refreshments, hear a few words from old friends and present them with something special.

Beyond - featuring the works of AK Westerman

  • Graphite

Open Reception is July 9, 2016 from 7-11pm. The exhibit will be on display through July 30, 2016.

THE EXHIBITION

With BEYOND, AK Westerman offers a compilation of works designed to incite the imagination and encourage us to embrace a state of amazement and wonder we so often abandon after childhood. Vivid swirls of color and washes of light contrast with furtive, otherworldly creatures wrapped in darkness. Lush landscapes teeming with new life integrate seamlessly with technological and inorganic elements in intricately detailed compositions. Each piece is left deliberately open to interpretation, and invites escape to a world confined only by the limits of our own innovation.

THE ARTIST

AK’s joy in creating comes from a deep desire to comment on humanity’s place on this earth, and the constant battle between man, nature and technology. She works primarily with acrylics and mixed media within the genres of surrealism, science fiction and fantasy. Each piece is intentionally ambiguous, allowing the viewer to fill in pieces of the story according to their own unique perspective without being unduly influenced by the artist’s personal narrative. Though many of her works are developed on a large scale to create an almost ‘epic’ feel for the viewer, AK often brings her unique visions to hand painted skateboards, musical instruments and even prosthetics. She delights in creating highly detailed pieces with carefully hidden elements that encourage the audience to ‘rediscover’ the work each time it is viewed. The term ‘organic’ is an apt description for both AK’s creative process and her choice of subject matter, as she prefers to let the work take on a life of its own and her subconscious express itself freely and fluidly without preconceptions.
