Plaza District to Crowd-fund New Public Art Piece

Join our Sponsored by YOU campaign to raise $5,000 through crowdsourcing for a new, commissioned public art sculpture in the Plaza District! The sculpture artist, or team of artists, selected by a committee, will debut their plans for the art piece at the 19th annual Plaza District Festival on September 30.

‘Sponsored by YOU’ donations are accepted online at plazadistrictfestival.com. By accepting individual online micro-donations, the Plaza District Association will recognize the community, name by name, as official sponsors of this annual event at the Plaza District Festival.

“Last year, $4,000 was raised to support Plaza Walls, a curated, rotating mural project that included 20 artists debuted 20 new murals covering 5200 square feet of outdoor wall space, in 2015, we accepted $2,000 worth of micro-donations for much needed Festival supplies like extension cords and tents,” said Cayla Lewis, Executive Director of the Plaza District Association. “This year our campaign focus is a new piece of sculpture art that will be installed in the Plaza District for our community and guests alike to enjoy.”

2nd Annual OKIP Wrongful Conviction Day Fish Fry

Saint’s Bar and Lounge is hosting a fish fry to raise money for the Oklahoma Innocence Project (OKIP) at Oklahoma City University School of Law. The OKIP is a non-profit organization that helps wrongfully convicted Oklahomans regain their freedom. The Project operates on private donations and we offer legal services to our clients free of charge.

For your show of support, with $27.50, you will receive one (1) food ticket, two (2) drink tickets, and one (1) free raffle ticket. Additional raffle tickets will be available for sale. There will be a number of local bands providing live entertainment during the event and all proceeds benefit the OKIP.

OKIP had its first exonerations in May 2016, when a Tulsa County Judge found Malcolm Scott and De'Marchoe Carpenter actually innocent and set them free. The pair had been in prison for 22 years, having been wrongfully convicted of murder in a 1994 Tulsa County drive-by shooting.

The Project is housed at OCU Law and law students work on cases under the supervision of project staff. Since opening in August 2011, there have been over 1,300 requests for assistance. As was the case for Malcolm and De'Marchoe, litigation can take years and cost tens of thousands of dollars. Currently, OKIP has three cases pending in the courts; Willard O’Neal, Tulsa County, Rodney Fisher, Tulsa County, and Patrick Sampson, Pawnee County. This is in addition to the many others being investigated, but not yet filed.

Kitfox featuring ill suburbia

Kitfox: https://www.kitfoxmusic.com/getafreesong

Fronted by young talent Emilee Holgate, Kitfox is an upcoming band in the dreamy desert pop genre. Her innate ability to combine atmospheric acoustic guitar patterns with heartfelt lyrics comprises the heart and soul of each song. The band usually emphasizes acoustic guitar played by Holgate, drums courtesy of Nate Dukatz, Thomas Lundquist on bass, piano and synth from Devon Smith, and the ethereal baritone guitar sounds of Conor Flynn.

Kitfox released their debut album, To Keep You Company, in February 2016. This album has received a multitude of favorable reviews including the following:

"Far-reaching and impossibly destined, this full-length debut is a balanced culmination of hard work and fate. After having secured a $10,000 Kickstarter pledge, Flynn met Gabe Simon of the band Kopecky, a Kitfox favorite, who agreed to produce the album at The Study in Nashville, Tennessee. Since finishing recording, Kitfox has met national acclaim, with two of the album’s songs being featured on a pair of popular television shows. (“Always Keep You Warm” was featured on MTV’s Real World: Go Big or Go Home, while “Misery” was featured on ABC’s Blood & Oil, respectively.)"

2017 Urban Pioneer Awards

The 16th Street Plaza District Association will honor Jonathan Fowler, Vice President of Operations of Fowler Holding Co., as the recipient of the 2017 Urban Pioneer Award at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 1 at the Oklahoma City University School of Law, 800 N Harvey Ave. Presented by Fowler Automotive and Oklahoma Employees Credit Union, the Urban Pioneer Award is given annually to individuals in the Oklahoma City community who exemplify Oklahoma’s pioneering spirit with their leadership and commitment to urban revitalization.

"Jonathan Fowler has a history of cultivating community wherever he goes. Jonathan’s leadership in advocating for music, arts, and culture is unmatched. Through local music series, food truck markets, and festivals his investment and support of the arts has created a positive impact that continues to enhance the quality of life for those who experience it. We are celebrating not only Jonathan’s impact in our Plaza District community but in communities across the state by naming him the 2017 Urban Pioneer.” – Ashley Terry, Plaza District Association Board President and Director of Public Life for Wheeler District.

Born and raised in Norman, Oklahoma, Jonathan studied Letters at The University of Oklahoma after graduating from Casady High School. After college he worked as a financial analyst for Fowler Holding, eventually attending the National Automobile Dealer Academy. He opened Fowler Volkswagen in 2010, serving as GM of the store and as a member of the Volkswagen Dealer Council before moving back to the Holding Company in 2013 as VP of Operations.

Jonathan has been passionate about the arts since an early age which later led to a passion for community service after college.  He was a founding member and former chair of the Norman Music Festival, served as president of the Norman Arts Council, and vice chair of the Norman Public Arts Board. Jonathan is also the producer for the VDub Sessions, a partnership with Fowler Volkswagen of Norman, and The SpyFM. Through working closely with organizations like the Plaza District, H&8th, Film Row, Historic Capitol Hill, Kendall Whittier in Tulsa, and the Downtown Norman Arts District Jonathan has developed a love for placemaking.

This is the thirteenth year for the award.  Tom McDaniel was the first honoree in 2005, followed by Lou Kerr (2006), Meg Salyer (2007), Mike Turpen and Mark Funke (2008), Ann Simank (2009), Steve Mason (2010), Bill and Bob Ross (2011), Wayne Coyne and Michelle Martin (2012), Chip Fudge (2013), Midtown Renaissance (2014), Heather and Keith Paul (2015) and Paula Stover (2016).   The event is the largest fundraiser each year for the Plaza District Association.  Proceeds support ongoing neighborhood revitalization efforts.  There are five sponsorship levels for table seating, ranging from $300 (seating for two) to $5,000 (presenting sponsor, seating for eight).  Email Cayla Lewis at director@plazadistrict.org for information. Individual tickets for the luncheon are now available for sale for $50 and can be purchased here.
